Heartworm Prevention Updates

This year, there is a new heartworm prevention for dogs. When heartworm disease first came on the scene fifty years ago, the only available preventative had to be given once every day. As you can imagine, it was very easy to forget to use it on a daily basis.

In the mid 1980’s, we were very happy when a once a month preventative was developed. The monthly preventatives were proven to be very safe and effective. But even so, we had to remember to give them once every 30 days.

Despite these developments in heartworm prevention, heartworm disease has become more prevalent. Every state in the continental U.S.A. has had cases of heartworm disease diagnosed. As a result the American Heartworm Association has advised giving preventatives year round.

This new heartworm preventative can eliminate forgetting to give it. It is called Proheart 12. Proheart 12 is an injectable heartworm prevention that your veterinarian can administer under the skin. Once it has been given your pet will be protected for 12 months. This fits in very nicely with the American Heartworm Associations recommendation of year round prevention. It also eliminates forgetting to give a monthly preventative. Although it has recently been approved for use in the United States, it has been used in Europe for 20 years. During that time it has been proven to be safe and effective. As with any medication, please discuss the pros and cons of its use with your veterinarian
